NHM/New Haven Music is a blog/calendar/resource page created to help promote original music in the Greater New Haven, CT. area and the infrastructure that surrounds it. We work for no one except the local New Haven music scene at large. Our ultimate goal is to better the local music scene for the benefit of all. In short, we wish to see the local music community flourish and will do all in our power to accomplish this goal. Please help us support the artists, venues, promoters, record labels and local media that make local music possible. We believe that New Haven has great potential to become a thriving arts & music community and we invite you along to help turn this potential into reality. Support local music!

Who runs this thing??
The groundwork and ideology behind NHM (New Haven Music) was originally laid out by one Robert Breychak (known to many as ‘Bob Rock’) in 2001 while still attending college at S.C.S.U.. As a New Haven area musician himself, he wanted to create a site that promoted local music while also serving as a resource for other local musicians. Originally operating under the name ‘Elm City Music’ (and at the domain elmcitymusic.com), Bob attempted to realize his vision in an era largely devoid of social media and high-speed communications. Without the proper resources and/or tools in place to effectively integrate his vision, Bob abandoned the project. Five years later, following the rise of social media, technological advancements and increased activity in the local music community, Bob finally put together a page on MySpace and later Facebook, WordPress and Twitter. Along the way, he received help from other area musicians, photographers, promoters and pretty much anyone else who cared about local music. By and large though, Bob has remained the sole creative force behind the site.
No, really, who do you work for?
Shorter answer: No one! As a rule, no one receives monetary compensation for their contributions to NHM.
Longer answer: Everyone! We are working to make the Greater New Haven music scene a happier and healthier place to be.
Why does your shows calendar not include ALL area shows?
In response we feel the need to re-state our mission in creating this page. This page is dedicated to original New Haven area music and the network of venues, studios, labels and promoters who support such music. We ourselves do not work for any such entity. We simply want to help create a healthy environment for local original music. As a result there is a fairly straightforward yet strict set of rules we follow when listing shows on this page. They are:
1. No cover/tribute bands. We do not support cover bands of any sort (even local). The whole concept of cover/tribute bands goes directly against our mission statement of supporting original music.
2. We only list shows that are being held at local area venues. If you’re a local band and you’re on tour (or playing outside of the New Haven area), that’s great, more power to you. However we won’t list those shows on this site (please refer to our mission statement again).
3. We do not support dance parties or billings consisting solely of DJs. Don’t get us wrong, dancing is great and dance parties with good DJs can be a lot of fun. However they again go against our mission statement (original music only).
Do you book shows?
NHM recently signed on to help February Records present this year’s Elm City Popfest, occurring at a variety of New Haven venues in the Fall of 2011. In addition we plan on putting together the occasional billing at select local venues starting this summer (2011).
I’m in a band that wants to hop on one of the shows listed on your calendar; can you hook me up?
Since we currently have no hand in booking any of the shows listed on our site, we recommend contacting the venue or promoter who’s putting the show on, or the other bands that are already on the billing.
How can I submit shows/corrections to your shows calendar?
Please e-mail us at nhm.newhavenmusic@gmail.com.
I liked your MySpace page a lot; why did you dismantle it?
The vision of what we thought NHM should be outgrew what MySpace could offer. In the end we felt it would be more beneficial to everyone to find a new home elsewhere. Our MySpace page will remain active, although in a reduced capacity mainly for promotional purposes.
What happened to your ‘Artists of the Month’ series?
While our home was on MySpace, we would periodically highlight 3 to 4 local bands from a wide range of genres by posting music, bios and photos about them. An updated version of this series is currently in the works for this Spring (2011) and will most likely appear on the Home or Artists page (or both) of this site.
Are you in any way affiliated with New Haven Magazine?
No. Although it is our understanding that the magazine is sometimes abbreviated as ‘N.H.M.,’ that’s pretty much where the similarities/affiliations stop.
I would like to contribute to NHM. How do I get involved? Please e-mail us at nhm.newhavenmusic@gmail.com and we’ll talk!
Where else can I find you online?
NHM also has pages on MySpace (our original home although no longer updated), Facebook and Twitter.
